Living with Awareness

Most people become interested in Krav Maga for self defense, but they stick with it because we make it fun and relatable. As it turns out, the people we attract aren’t really interested in rehearsing violence week after week. That’s why we approach our art as a whole-person activity.

For example, the subject of “situational awareness” inevitably comes up as a concept in self defense classes around the world. First of all, let’s just drop the sensational term “situational” and simply call it ‘awareness’ – living with awareness. We can’t choose when or where an emergency might happen, and according to Murphy’s law, an emergency is most likely to occur when we least expect it. With that stated, teaching about situational awareness in a stressful way is a grave mistake because if you live in a constantly heightened state, that is called hyper-vigilence, and it is disease.

The fundamental purpose of self defense is to increase your quantity and quality of life. While there is a ‘chance’ that you will need to use your self defense skills to defend your life, it is a certainty that living in a stressed and heightened state will shorten your life-span, ruin your physical and mental health, and lower your quality of living. That is why I say it is a grave mistake to teach “situational awareness”.

If you really want to live with awareness, you need to understand how to live with empowered awareness throughout your every day life. This is part of inner peace.

Every movement I teach is associated with a mindful frame. Every expression of power comes from a positive place. That is the whole point of education and training, to elevate you. KAPAP is distinguished from other forms of Krav Maga and self defense, because we don’t teach self-defense. We teach self-empowerment.

Rather than reinforcing your fears and inferiority complexes, you can learn to trust yourself, understand your body, space, time, and move with freedom and truth. When you become one with the truth, you don’t need to know techniques.
